Techniques
I often get asked what color I would paint something and it's far more complicated than a one word answer. For example, if I paint a piece in grey, I am often layering three different colors, depending on what colors are in the room where it will be. The layers are close in color to each other and are very subtle, yet this will add interesting dimension. I may then glaze or wax or simply stop there.
I am well-versed in several painting techniques and mediums, including:
- Chalk paints
- Milk paints
- Textured paints
- Metallic paints
- Paint washes such as a white wash
- Custom color blending
- Dry brushing
- Distressing
- Glazes
- Waxing
Each of these mediums will look different depending upon what I choose to seal them with. Often times, I choose wax or a dead-flat sheen for an old-world or French look. Yet, I would choose high-gloss for modern furniture. And sometimes, I combine several mediums and sealants all on one piece to create a one-of-a-kind finish.
